Karachi: Fresh political violence that gripped the commercial capital of the country on Wednesday night following the comment by a senior Pakistan People’s Party leader against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and its leadership, claimed more than 15 lives and over 42 vehicles were torched in the city.
Hospitals sources said that more than 50 injured were brought to different hospitals of the city. The flare-up in the violence crippled the daily life activities in the city as trade and commercial centres and all major and small markets are closed. Public and private transport are off the road and the whole city is in the grip of fear.
Angry mobs went on a rampage and burned vehicles after Zulfiqar Mirza, urged the people of Karachi and Hyderabad, the second-largest city of Sindh, to “stand up … and rid yourselves” of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Provincial home minister Manzoor Wasan said 14 people were killed and 25 wounded in violence since last night. At least one person was killed in Hyderabad, police said. However, Edhi and police sources said that at least 15 people were killed and more than 42 vehicles were torched in Karachi.
Many roads were closed in Karachi after protesters torched several vehicles following heavy firing all night in many areas.
It is to be mentioned here that Mirza had apologized for his comments.
“My statement last night was my personal view and was not meant to hurt anybody’s sentiments. But if it has done that, I sincerely apologize,” he said in a statement.
