Loder: At least ten Yemeni soldiers have been killed in an ambush by armed groups on a road in south of Yemen, military officials say. Military officials said ‘militants’ opened fire on a vehicle carrying the soldiers in southern city of Loder in Abyan province on Wednesday, media reports said.
Only the driver survived despite injuries, according to a medical source.
The country has been the scene of anti-government protests, where hundreds of protesters have been killed and many more injured in a brutal crackdown waged by Ali Abdullah Saleh’s despotic regime.
Saleh and five other high ranking Yemeni officials were evacuated to Saudi Arabia for alleged medical treatment following a rocket attack on the Yemeni presidential palace on June 3.
A UN mission visiting the Middle Eastern country said Yemen needs urgent international aid to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
The UN mission issued a statement on Wednesday warning against a “collective punishment” of Yemeni civilians.
“We call on the international community to quickly provide humanitarian aid to Yemen during this difficult time,” read the statement at the end of the UN mission’s nine-day visit.
“We remind everyone, whether government or non-government parties, that civilians should not fall as victims of collective punishment because of the power struggle” in the country, the statement added.
Nearly 40 percent of Yemen’s population live on a wage of $2 per day or less, while a third of the population are reportedly at risk of chronic hunger.
