Islamabad: Establishment Division on Saturday cancelled the notification to transfer Zafar Ahmed Qureshi, former Additional Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), to National Police Foundation, by separating him from the investigation of NICL’s mega corruption scandal .
Sources told The News Tribe that the decision was taken following the Friday’s order of Supreme Court, wherein the apex court had ordered cancellation of Qureshi’s removal from investigation of National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) mega corruption scandal.
Zafar Qureshi was investigation officer of the NICL corruption case and had made remarkable progress in the multi-billions corruption scam involving big guns of the incumbent dispensation including Senior Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim and son of the other senior minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and others. He had recovered over billion of looted money of the national kitty from the accused of the scam including Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim, as his family had deposited over Rs40 millions in the national exchequer.
Qureshi, who was investigating the scam on SC order, was reportedly removed on the demand of Chaudhrys to pay the way for their joining the PPP-led coalition government, as they were fearing Qureshi would get incriminating evidences against Moonis Elahi, who is currently behind the bars in connection with the mega scandal.
The Supreme Court had taken notice of the removal of Zafar Qureshi from NICL investigation, terming it as interference in the apex court’s affairs, as Qureshi was investigating the scandal on SC order. Currently, top bureaucrat including Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Interior Secretary and Establishment Secretary, besides former FIA DG Malik Iqbal were facing contempt of court proceeding for transferring Qureshi.
The SC had asked the government to bring back Qureshi to the investigation of the scandal, however, government refused. Consequently, the Supreme Court issued orders and cancelled the transfer of Qureshi from NICL investigation to National Police Foundation on Friday, when the court was apprised that the Prime Minister had rejected the summary to bring back Qureshi.
Sources said that in wake of the Supreme Court’s directives, Establishment Division cancelled the notification of Qureshi’s transfer to NPF.
