Kabul: At least 20 Afghan civilians including women and children were killed after a landmine exploded under a bus they were traveling in, a senior police figure said.
The blast occurred in the south-western province of Nimroz on the main highway linking Nimroz to Kandahar, the capital of southern Afghanistan.
“An IED (improvised explosive device) struck a bus, 20 civilians were killed,” said Haji Mosa Rasooli.
Earlier in the day six members of a family died in southern Afghanistan when a roadside bomb ripped through their car.
The family was travelling to Lashkar Gah, the main town in Helmand province, when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, a provincial spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.
“Four children, one female and one male were killed in the sedan car en route to [the provincial] capital,” he added.
According to Afghan officials there have been many a number of landmines in war-ravaged Afghanistan since the cold war period which were yet to be cleared.
Despite 150,000 US-led foreign troops in Afghanistan law and order situation in the Afghanistan was still deteriorating. And civilians are the biggest casualties in the near 10-year war in the country.
