Islamabad: An eleven-judge bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday started hearing into the presidential reference for revisiting the death sentence handed down to Pakistan People’s Party founder and former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
Federation’s lawyer Babar Awan argued that former SC CJ had confessed that decision to award death sentence to Bhutto was wrong and his statement could not be ignored. Justice Jawwad S Khuwaja asked why present judges should repent wrongdoing of past judges.
Justice Iqbal said the sitting judges could repent the wrongdoings. The Chief Justice observed that the court wanted to strengthen the parliament.
Babar Awan argued that no person who abets any crime could be awarded death sentence. The CJ ruled that accused and co-accused are liable to same punishment. The hearing was put off till Tuesday.
