Washington: The United States President announced the withdrawal of 10,000 US troops from Afghanistan this year.
In a televised speech on Wednesday, the US president announced that the withdrawal of 33,000 US troops from Afghanistan would be completed by September 2012.
“We are starting this drawdown from a position of strength. Al Qaeda is under more pressure than at any time since 9/11,” Obama said. “Challenges remain. This is the beginning—but not the end—of our effort to wind down this war.”
Up to 5,000 troops will begin leaving next month. A second wave of about 5,000 troops would be withdrawn by year’s end, he said. All of the remaining 33,000 surge forces that began arriving in January 2010 would depart by August and September 2012.
Obama said today we have completed our commitment of withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
Obama called Osama bin Laden’s death a victory for all who have served since the attacks. He said information recovered from the al-Qaida leader’s compound in Abottabad, a garrison city of Pakistan, show the terror group under “enormous strain” and on a “path to defeat.”
He appreciated the efforts of Pakistan in war on terror. But, he stressed Pakistan that it has to work more in this ground.
British Prime Minister David Cameron and US Defence Secretary Robert Gates also supported Obama’s Afghan policy.
