Washington: Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, is under severe pressure by fellow officers who demanded him to explain why Pakistan supports US policy, Washington Post reported.
The post while quoting US official who requested anonymity due to touchy nature of the issue said Kayani “is fighting to survive and his corps commanders are very strongly anti-US right now, so he has to appease them.”
The paper reported that the security relationship between the US and Pakistan has sunk to its lowest level.
Outspokenness to top officers is virtually unheard of in the strict Pakistani military chain of command, and open criticism of Kayani “is something no Pakistani military commander has ever had to face before and nobody should underestimate the pressure he’s now under.” The Post quotes another US official.
The paper noted that tension over US Pakistani relations is building on the American side, as well. Lawmakers on Wednesday expressed outrage that a number of Pakistanis who had helped gather intelligence for the CIA about Osama bin Laden’s compound have been arrested.
