Islamabad: Government of Pakistan on Tuesday constituted an independent six-member committee to probe the Abottabad operation, conducted by the US special commandos on May 2 that led to the death of former al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.
The committee is formed following a unanimous resolution passed in a joint session of the parliament of Pakistan. The commission will be headed by Justice Javed Iqbal. Other members of the commission will be Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim, Lieutenant General (Retd) Nadeem Ahmed, former diplomat Ashraf Jahangir, former Inspector General (IG) Police Abbas Khan and federal secretary cabinet division Nargis Sethi.
Sources said it is yet to be decided that when the commission would start its work and in how many days the commission would submit its report.
It is pertinent to mention here that there was a lot of pressure on government of Pakistan for constituting an independent commission to interrogate the May 02 incident. It was also decided in the joint in-camera session of the parliament that no one from government and opposition would be included in the commission.
The resolution demanded formation of the commission within 7 days but it took 18 days to the government to take the decision.
The meeting decided that judges, lawyers and civil society members would be included in the commission. But, a retired Lieutenant General has been included in the commission.
