Why do we spend more than 50 percent of our resources on feeding the armed forces when they can’t defend anybody, not even themselves? This is the question that everybody is asking everybody these days in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s armed forces are notorious for eating up more than 50 percent of the nation’s resources every year. Since the attack in Abbottabad that killed Osama bin Laden, people have become vocal in denouncing the armed forces as incapable of defending the nation.
“The real problem is not that they cannot defend the nation. The real problem is that they are not willing to,” said a disgruntled youngster in Karachi while talking to The News Tribe. “These people have never done what they get paid for. They have always failed to deliver. They have never won a war. They lost even in 1965.”
A college teacher said there is no need to keep these armed forces because they have never performed their duties. “They are brave only before us, the civilians. They dance on our chests (hamare seenon per charh kar nachtay hain), but when the enemy comes they run away (lakin jab dushman aata hai to yeh bhaag jate hain).”
The views of a retired army officer were, however, different. He defended the institution that he served. He said the people should not put all the blame on the armed forces. “The political leadership is equally to blame. They deal with the leadership of the United States. They should be brave enough to take a firm stand.”
