Karachi: At least 12 Navy officials and a Rangers were killed during a battle with terrorists at Pakistan Naval Station (PNS) Mehran, Pakistan Navy Spokesman Commodore Irfanul Haq.
The spokesman said that 11 Navy and three Rangers officials were injured in attack. He added that the operation had interned into final stage and would be completed soon.
While the media reports said that the operation might take several hours to be completed as the base was spread over large area.
The sources said that at least four terrorists have committed suicide and another four have been arrested after Pakistan Army Special Commandos launched a fresh counter offensive to flush out the invaders after dawn on Monday.
Media reports said that army helicopters were overhead in the area and a search operation was still underway.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have accepted the responsibility for the attack.Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan talking to Reuters news agency termed the attack as revenge of killing of Osama bin Laden. It was the proof that we are still united and powerful,” he added.
According to reports 10 to 15 terrorists penetrated into the base from three different sides, Saharah-e-Faisal, Gulsitan-e-Johar and PAF Museum and blown up guard room. The sources said that militants used hand grenades and rocket launchers, destroying two PC-3 Orian aircraft.
