Karachi: Two people were killed and as many as 12 vehicles were set on blaze in different parts of the city as Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) observed mourning day on Sunday over the killing of party leader and former member of the Sindh Assembly, Liaqat Qureshi.
In wake of MQM mourning day, public transport remained off the road and business centres remained closed. During the day, as many as 12 vehicles were set ablaze in Karachi by unidentified persons, while unidentified people resorted to aerial firing in many parts of the city .
The party’s Deputy Convener Dr Farooq Sattar on Saturday announced to observe mourning day on Sunday over the killing of Qureshi during a a press conference at MQM’s headquarters.
The ex-MPA Liaqat Qureshi was laid to rest in Karachi on Saturday. His funeral was attended by his relatives, as well as Mustafa Kamal, Dr Sagheer Ahmed and other party workers. Qureshi had been shot dead near Muskan Chorangi area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal by unidentified people.
Transporters are avoiding bringing buses on the road on Sunday as miscreants torched vehicles in various parts of the city in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile violence in Karachi claimed two more lives and left two injured on Sunday.
Shahrukh, a resident of Sirjani Town, was killed in a firing incident by unidentified men in the Ajmeer Nagri area of Karachi.
Another person was gunned down at the Jinnah Bridge. In a separate incident, two other people were injured when armed men opened fire on a passenger bus in Malir. A woman was among those who were injured.
Law enforcement agencies have arrested eight alleged miscreants, however their identity is yet to be disclosed.
