Washington: US House Speaker John Boehner announced Republicans has reached a last minute spending deal with the White House and Congressional Democrats, averting an ugly government shutdown one hour before the current stopgap measure expires.
Boehner said he expects a vote on the long-term funding bill next week. He said the House will vote later in the night to pass a stopgap bill in order to get the government through next Thursday.
Boehner presented the bipartisan deal to avert a government shutdown to members of his caucus Friday evening. He informed his colleagues of the details and asked them to pass a three to six day stop-gap measure to keep the government funded.
Speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama said the deal is the largest spending cuts in US budget history, representing some 78.5 billion dollars cuts to his 2011 budget proposal.
Senate Democratic Leader John Reid later made a statement from the Senate chamber. He said in addition to the cuts, the two sides also reached an agreement on policy riders, which include controversial provision to defund health group Planned Parenthood and eliminate funding for family planning services.
The Senate later passed the stopgap bill with a voice vote, and the House is expected to follow suit.
