Rio De Janeiro: At least 11 people were killed and 18 other were wounded people in a shooting incident at a school in Rio de Janeiro, and later the shooter killed himself, authorities said.
The shocking incident took place at Tasso da Silveira Primary School in Rio’s Realengo District serves children between nine and 14 years old.
Police said the gunman left a letter saying he wanted to commit suicide, but they also said he appeared to have prepared for a major deadly assault. The police said, he had two revolvers and loads of ammunition.
Authorities identified the shooter as 24-year-old Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, a former student at the public school.
Rescue worker Evandro Bezerra said several of the dead had been shot in the head.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said she was ‘shocked and disturbed’ at the shooting. ‘Innocent children lost their lives and their future,’ she said in a brief television speech.
Education Minister, Fernando Haddad said the attack was ‘an unprecedented tragedy in Brazil,’ adding that ‘this is a day of mourning for all Brazilian education.’
