There are two ways of meeting difficulties: you alter the difficulties, or you alter yourself to meet them. The talent of our nation has always been proved outstanding when challenged. Recently, a group of talented Pakistani students have made us proud to be the people of this nation.
Automotive industry is the sector that can bring economic boom in a country. In this industry, China tops the list by manufacturing 13,790,994 cars in 2009 while Japan and USA are next with 7,934,516 and 5,711,823 respectively. Unfortunately, Pakistan has still not appeared in this sector.
Accepting the challenge, the group of ambitious and hardworking students from NED University of Engineering and Technology has set a remarkable example by manufacturing a model car all by itself. The car “Uzba” was made back in 2010 where it offered 80km per liter petrol. Now the car is back, modified and improved, and runs about 200km per liter petrol. Amazing! New EFI Engine, modified body and ultra-light parts promise maximum number of miles. The shining, attractive and compact car Uzba can grab anyone’s attention.
These students belong to Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments and the team calls itself ‘WINMARK’.
Winmark has designed the car, Uzba to participate in the upcoming global competition by Shell in Malaysia which invites the students worldwide to design car with best mileage. Shell Eco Marathon is a worldwide event where student teams design, build and compete their energy-efficient vehicles. SEM 2011 will take place on 6-8th July 2011 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where teams from China, India, Pakistan, Malaysia and other countries will participate.
Speaking to this writer, the team leader Haris said that all the cost has been contributed by the students themselves. They’ve worked day and night to bring the car from design to execution. “No organization has contacted us for full sponsorship yet. We’re students and we cannot bear the full expenses of manufacturing and especially transporting the car to Malaysia for competition,” said Haris. He said that they’re representing Pakistan in a global competition and therefore need financial assistance for this.
Winmark member Ashraf says, “We’ve worked very hard to win and Inshallah if we do, we have plans to launch the car commercially. The car is economical, eye-catching and safe so it would be an ideal car for anyone. Its body is made of fiber so it guarantees road safety. We’ll be proud if we launch a car from Pakistan.”
Done with a brilliant task, these students now require the support of sponsors in order to take this achievement to Malaysia where 6000+ people, 3000+ representatives from supporting organizations and media from 20+ countries will be waiting at the grand event. Uzba has received great feedback in the public displays at Creek Club, Park Towers, Pearl Continental Hotel and other places. Team Winmark is very optimistic about 2011 and is working day and night to accomplish its objective. Uzba is all set to rock SEM 2011.
Although these determined students have no financial assistance, they have talent, skill and above all, enthusiasm to reach skies. We them good luck!
