Islamabad: The UN refugee agency in association with the Ministry of SAFRON is undertaking the Population Profiling, Verification and Response (PPVR) household survey on registered Afghans in Pakistan to examine their livelihoods, health, social conditions and legal problems.
“The data from this survey will provide important new information on the situation for this longstanding population in Pakistan who mainly fled various waves of conflict in their country over the past three decades,” said Mengesha Kebede, the UNHCR Representative in Pakistan.
“The information will help inform UNHCR, the Pakistan and Afghanistan governments, and development agencies better plan their policies and respond to the situation,” Kebede continued.
The PPVR is being carried out by UNHCR’s implementing partners BEFAR and EBDM. The survey will reach an estimated 120,000 households and will continue throughout 2011. All survey teams include female interviewers to conduct interviews with women.
“This is an important chance for Afghans to tell us about their concerns, aspirations, plans and contributions they make to Pakistan and we encourage them to cooperate with our survey teams,” noted Kebede.
Joint Secretary SAFRON Dr. Imran Zeb emphasised that PPVR is an important exercise that will help government of Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as UNHCR to plan for the welfare of Afghans. In particular it is an essential tool for the Pakistan government to implement management strategy for Afghans. He said it would provide useful data for issuance of work permit and durable solution that includes flexible visa regime.
The PPVR is not linked to the Poverty Survey currently being carried out by the Pakistan government for the Pakistani citizens.
Pakistan hosts around 1.7 million registered Afghan who have the right to stay in Pakistan until the end of 2012.
