In the first half of the 20th century, when Word War‑I ended with the Central powers defeated at the hands of the Allied Powers with the Ottoman Empire crippled being part of the defeated side, a new world order was bracing for its beginning.
The Ottoman Empire was divided among the Allied powers like property left in inheritance by a deceased is being distributed among the heirs. Several nation states were carved out of the Arab Ottoman territories.
With the fall of Ottoman Empire, not only centrality of the Muslim Ummah vanished, but the institution of Khilafat came to an end leading to division among Muslims.
The last half of the 20th century proved this perception to be correct as all Muslim countries behaved like they were only concerned with their own state businesses.
After the end of Cold War with the defeat of USSR in Afghanistan which led to its disintegration, a new world order replaced the previous bipolar world order that was unipolar. But this world order now seemed to be falling now as power centers have emerged to challenge the unipolar world order, which is American Order.
There are popular uprising in many countries especially in Arab world against the despotic and totalitarian regimes, which have made their people to live in abject poverty and deny their freedom.
Although causes of the recent popular awakening in different Arab countries vary from country to country but one thing is common among the revolutionary masses and that is they want dignity in place of foreign dictates, accountability for corruption, justice for inequality and crime and above all the right to live a free life in place of strangulation.
The uprisings have started to swallow decade long tyrant dispensations one by one and its first prey was Zein el Abedin of Tunisia. It is commonly considered that these uprising are Youth Movements which is of course partly correct but people shouldn’t forget that the masters who ruled these territories for more than a century (half century direct rule and half century through local proxies) will not let their colonies go out of their hands freely to the control of those who are the biggest threat to Western civilization; that is the educated Muslim youth. The timing was not predetermined but the toppling of the old regimes was pre-decided. It is to see how many regimes become a target of this wind of rage. However, something that needs to be focused on is the aftermath of the uprisings. What are these countries going to do when their masses have no experience of governance as the people of Egypt would elect their leader for the first time after a long period of 5000 years? Similar is the case of the other Arab countries as well.
It is also an astonishing fact that the date of the Iranian Revolution coincided with the resignation of Hosni Mubarak. The people of the Arab countries, who assume that they have liberated themselves from the dictatorial regime, are prey to a grave misunderstanding. They have shifted their system from tyranny to liberal democracy which is as brutal as the previous authoritarian regimes. The only difference is that they carry the label of “people’s representatives” but actually obeying the dictates of their real masters. All the new governments are the part of old regimes like Omer Suleiman of Egypt is appointed by Hosni Mubarak himself.
Since the tyrant regimes are falling in Arab countries, Western governments have growing concerns that the old regimes could be replaced by Islamists and their concerns are being clearly clarified by the new regimes like Omer Suleiman, who declared that Egypt’s post-uprising governments would respect treaties with Israel. One should wonder why will Egypt respect the treaty which was signed by the dictators. Is there any foreign hand behind this popular uprising? Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Omer Suleiman’s statement so is Omer Suleiman considered as reliable man by Israeli circle?
One thing is evident that in the new elected governments some power will rest in the Islamist’s control and they will definitely exercise their limited power. Islamists were never in the front line during the mass uprising neither do they have any intentions to take over power in a chaotic situation like the military dictators, who staged coups in the past to overthrow governments. They believe in service to the common people, and have established their goodwill and popularity. They are trying to win the hearts of people, who will in return vote them as their saviors and then they will rule the country under the teaching of Quran and Sunnah.
The wave of rage might topple all the tyrants in the Middle East, as they have been removed from Non Arab countries, but the instances are around that mass uprising didn’t bring much needed change in society rather paved the way for just change of face.
Before time runs out, there must be some constructive suggestions for the people who took to the street for the betterment of their nations and future generations. So far the wave of uprising is regional in nature and Arab countries are under the domino effect of change so these solutions should also be regional in terms. If Arab unification is recommended, it will further widen the Arab-non Arab divide in the Muslim world and that will be as destructive for the region as the Arab League was, which is always inactive in the heat of trouble but always active if the issue of the threat of nuclear Iran is raised. OIC can be restructured to address the collective concerns of the Muslim Ummah but if the same either liberal democrats or tyrants are seated and represent the OIC, it will remain as futile as it is now. Non state actors, which are very active and have some role to play in their respective countries and who pose direct threat to the hegemony of a Unipolar world, must be made the part of OIC as they are the true representatives of the wishes of the local masses who have no direct access to their elite-class rulers. Apart from their international role, they must continue their efforts at national level to keep check on their upcoming elected governments as it is the essence of true democracy.
