Amid sheer violation of human rights in Libya by government forces loyal to Qaddafi, European powers, especially Britain and France, are preparing a draft of resolution calling for imposition of a no fly zone over Libya to prevent forces loyal to Qaddafi from committing further brutality. The draft resolution will be presented in UN Security Council for authorizing a no fly zone on Libya.
Ostensibly it is aimed at stalling Qaddafi from aerial bombardment over innocent protestors but its actual purpose is to protect the precious oil refineries from being shelled.
Hitherto US is hesitant to impose a no fly zone over Libya as it has learnt lessons from the Iraq and Afghan wars where US unilaterally pushed to invade both countries, but afterwards the European countries started to pull back from these war zone areas. This no fly zone will probably be similar to the one adopted by the International community against Iraq during the second Gulf war. And the damage will definitely be similar. It is also reported that EU is also divided on No fly zone. But Western countries military tool is caring out espionage activities on Libyan skies (to check if any Oil refinery is hit).
It should be taken into account that when the Libyan people loathe their long-term ruler, who delivered to them them nothing but poverty, unemployment and low international standing, how can they welcome Western powers on their soil who are also responsible for these miseries. Since, the Western countries have always backed dictators for their own selfish interests.
Nobody came to rescue the Middle Eastern masses when their lives were affected by the atrocities inflicted on them by their national and international masters. Some powers even added to their problems. Why are they now so keen to “help” these outraged people who are trying to determine their own future through their own struggles and sacrifices? Is there a conspiracy to undermine their efforts? Reports reveals that Libyan opposition parties are also not in favor of no fly zone stating when people of Tunisia and Egypt can force their regimes to step down so why cant Libyans? It is true that Libyan tyrant is taking much time to leave power and rebels have to suffer more casualties than Tunisa and Egypt so it should also be kept in consideration that Qaddafi is more aged ruler that Egypt’s Husni Mubarak and Tunisia’s zein -el Abedin.
What if these people were American or European and they were fighting against their own administrations. What would have been the solution to this problem then? Negotiation between the rebels and the administration? Brokered by whom? Either by the administration itself, or another European country? Why can’t Qaddafi be persuaded to start negotiations? Why can’t a Muslim country come forward to help end this crisis which is heading toward civil war in Libya.
If imposition of a no fly zone is the solution, who will give an assurance that in case of a European no fly zone, Qaddafi will halt aerial bombardment. He is warning of sheer consequences in any case. Won’t he deter a no fly zone? In that case it would unleash further destruction over the Libyans. So will that be a solution or an addition to the problem?
Recent reports say that Arab league has come forward to seek No fly zone in a bid to protect Libyan from air strikes rejecting any foreign intervention but they have no idea as to how that no fly zone will be imposed. Neither can’t they be given any assurance by Western countries as when will that no fly zone be lifted. Western countries that imposed no fly zone on Iraq didn’t leave Iraq but completely destroyed with thousands Iraqi starving for basic necessities like food and medicine.
There is a high possibility that foreign intervention will unify the Libyans and Qaddafi would be relieved of support from his local rebels who will begin to support their country against foreign “invasion”. So isn’t it a strategic curb against the pro-democratic Libyans?
