Islamabad: The Army has declined to participate in census taking place in September due to its engagement in war on terror, say statistics division sources.
The sources said a letter was sent to the Army to seek its help in census, but the military leadership refused to take part in this process because of the engagement of the Army in the war on terror.
The Army will, however, be deployed to help civil administration in security matters in those areas that have been identified by provincial governments as sensitive.
Spokesman statistics division Qazi Saeed ul Hassan says the Army has its own engagements and it will be deployed in specific areas. He says the census will start from April. All the buildings and residences will be allotted numbers and their record will be maintained. The process of demarcation of all districts of the country, training of the staff and supply of maps has been completed.
He says no proposal is under consideration to impose curfew during day time for the census. The decision for announcing public holiday during census will be taken after consultation with the provinces, he added.
He says the country’s population is around 200 million.
