Geneva: Kashmiri representative Altaf Hussain Wani has appealed to the international community to help the people of Jammu and Kashmir in achieving their inalienable right to self-determination.
Wani made the appeal while addressing the world diplomats gathered at the 16th session of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council in Geneva.
“Despite the tall Indian claims of zero tolerance against human rights violations, the spree of killings continued in the occupied territory in 2010 without a stop,” he deplored. He pointed out that peaceful demonstrations were subjected to unchecked violence by Indian police and troops and the right to freedom of assembly and expression had been snatched.
He drew the Council’s attention towards the miseries of the rights defenders in the territory. “Indian authorities are deliberately silencing human rights defenders and muzzling the media to keep people in the world ill-informed about the ground situation in disputed Kashmir,” he stated.
Wani maintained that India had physically eliminated Kashmiri rights activists including Dr Abdul Ahad Guru, Dr Farooq Ashai, Jalil Andrabi and Pir Hisam-ud-Din for exposing Indian genocide in the occupied territory.
“During the last 22 years, over 100,000 Kashmiris have been killed, more than 10,000 disappeared and around 9,000 women raped by Indian troops due to immunity they enjoyed under the protection of draconian laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Public Safety Act and Disturbed Areas Act,” Wani added.
