Tokyo: An explosion was heard and smoke was seen at Tokyo Electric Power Co’s Fukushima No1 nuclear power plant, news agency quoted the police as saying on Saturday.
Sources said that walls and roof of the plant were destroyed following the blast while radiation level has has increased 1000 times.
Japan earlier in the day warned of a meltdown at the nuclear reactor damaged when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast coast, but said the risk of radiation contamination was small.
Earlier in the day, Japan launched a massive, military-led rescue operation after a giant quake and tsunami killed hundreds of people and turned the northeastern coast into a swampy wasteland as authorities braced for a possible meltdown at a nuclear reactor.
