Tehran: Two top opposition leaders of Green Movement, Mir-Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi, have been imprisoned, a move that will infuriate supporters, an Iranian website has claimed.
Kaleme, the official website of Mr Moussavi, said on Monday that the two leaders and their wives were transferred to Heshmatieh prison in Tehran, said to be run by the armed forces.
“According to the latest information from reliable sources, their arrest and transfer to jail is definite but the timing of their transfer is still vague,” the report on Kaleme said.
Iranian officials have largely banned the opposition leaders from receiving visitors, phone calls and accessing the internet over the past two weeks, after the opposition staged the biggest anti-regime rally in more than a year on February 14 in sympathy with uprisings in north Africa.
Analysts believed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all state affairs, was opposed to arresting the two men. It is not clear whether or why the top leader has now authorised their detention.
“Unconditional implementation of all clauses of the constitution, in particular those which are related to the rights of people, is non-negotiable and is the central goal and demand of the [Green] movement,” the five-page document said.
Amnesty International urged Iran on Monday to stop “ceaseless intimidation and harassment of political opponents, peaceful protesters and advocates of human rights”.
