Islamabad: Most Pakistanis believe that equality of citizens comes to their mind when they hear the word ‘democracy’, followed by elections and national assembly sessions, according to a recent Gallup Pakistan survey.
In the survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question: “What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘democracy’?” Twenty two percent (22%) said that equality of citizens comes to their mind when they hear this word followed by 21% who say elections and National Assembly sessions, each.
Some 13% said they thought about gatherings and processions when they heard ‘democracy’, 9% thought peace and prosperity each, while 4% gave no response.
The survey was carried out among a sample of 2774 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country during February 2011.
A detailed analysis of the data revealed that comparatively more urbanites (27%) believed that ‘democracy’ meant equality of citizens as compared to their rural counterparts (18%).
