Peshawar: At least five people were killed and 16 NATO oil tankers set on fire in Peshawar, the northern city of Pakistan, on late Thursday night, police said.
Local police said that a gang of 25 armed miscreants opened fire on oil tankers, standing on a terminal at Ring Road, Peshawar. As a result, oil tankers caught heavy fire, The News Tribe correspondent reported. The criminals managed to escape after the incident.
The police said that five people also lost their lives in the incident, out of them two were shot dead and other three received burnt injuries and died on the spot. They said, sixteen oil tankers were also destroyed in the incident.
There were at least 40 oil tankers standing at the time of the incident, the police said.
The bodies were shifted to a hospital for autopsy.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. Rescue teams facing difficulties to put out the fire because of heavy flames.
The police have cordoned off the area and started search operation in to the area for the arrest of the criminals.
It is pertinent to mention here that it is the first incident of setting NATO tankers on fire after contacts between Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan and Central Investigation Agency of the United States paralyzed over the issue of Raymond Davis, accused of killing two Pakistanis in Lahore on January 2011.
