KARACHI: Police have made headway after detaining two suspects, Naveed alias Polka and Danish, in connection with the murder of television reporter Wali Khan Baber.
Well placed sources say both suspects have admitted to their involvement in the case, but are keeping their location in tight wraps because of the sensitivity of the investigation.
“We know they are killers because all the evidence paints towards them”, said a police investigative officer who spoke on anonymity.
Babar was gunned down by unknown assailants in his car during a traffic jam on the Liaquatabad road.
The suspects, both of whom have a criminal record, revealed that they executed their action on the orders of their masters.
“They have admitted to their affiliation with a political party so the investigations have to be very silent through the handling of the case”, the officer said.
Karachi police is under tremendous pressure to catch and reveal the killers who are also said to be hired professionals.
Police officials are also careful while dealing with the matter since apparently there is no one ready or willing to own or keep the prisoners with them.
“Both boys are being rotated from one senior police officer to another. Even the police are scared for their own lives, so no one wants them”, a senior official of home department said on anonymity.
Another suspect of the case Liaquat is absconder and police could not find any clue about his hideout. Liaquat is officer of KBA and fled from the city after the incident.
“We are making raids for the arrest of Liaquat, the main suspect of the case and sure that will arrest him soon”, sources claimed.
Police detained a police official DSP Shakeel, said to be having close links with Liaquat and released after being interrogated.
Investigations onto Baber’s killing have progressed well police are close to cracking the mystery behind the killing.
“We will disclose those behind Babar’s killing and are hopeful that justice will be served”, Malik said in an interview to a private TV channel today.
Violence in Karachi left more than 2000 people dead in 2010. Ethnic and sectarian and religious street fights claimed more lives than the total number of people dead because of terrorist attacks.
