Karachi: The work on a project to write and translate specifically scientific books in Urdu to facilitate students was come to a halt after publishing 64 books in six years without meeting its set target of 90 books despite of three years extension in the project.
The task was assigned to Idara-e-Tasneef-o-Taleef-o-Tarjuma (ITTT) of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) at Gulshan Campus Karachi by Higher Education Commission (HEC).
According to sources the project was initiated under PC-I on 30 September 2004 for three years with sanctioned amount Rs 36.340 millions, however, it had to be extended for further three years which ended on 31 December 2010 but despite of doubling the time period the set target could not be met.
At first, Jameeluddin Aali was the honorary administrator of the project, however, he handed over the responsibility to Dr Aslam Farukhi due to his various engagements.
Under the project, 58 scientific books were written in Urdu while 06 were translated in the national language. Out of total aforementioned allocations, merely Rs 12 million was spent on publishing of books including all expenses.
Programme Coordinator Zafar Mohiuddin, when asked about the project, told The News Tribe that publication of 64 books is a significant achievement of the ITTT.
He said writing of scientific books or translating is not like a piece of cake, adding, there is dearth of human resource who are able to write or translate scientific books in Urdu and those are capable are not willing to do this job.
To a question about not meeting the set target despite lapse of six years, he replied that the work of writing books is not like constructing building that increase in number of labours would allow accomplishment of the project earlier, adding, the work belonged to mental relaxation so its time period could not be estimated correctly.
Zafar also underlined the need to translate and write books of other ologies as there is paucity of books in Urdu at high education level.
